I never thought I'd be doing headshots, but here we are.

Weirdly, I've never really thought about offering headshots before. I always considered myself more of an editorial portrait photographer, and headshot photographers were those other guys who made accountants look like serial killers on unevenly lit white backgrounds.

However, in the last few years it's been popping up more and more, and since moving into my studio at Abbotsford Convent, I've decided to offer it to the public. People really enjoy working with me, possibly because I'm a bit different to most people offering "headshots"—I come from an editorial portraiture background and I've realised that this is something I can offer to really help people.

Almost every time I do a headshot, I get an email from the sitter saying what a great time they had, and how wonderful the experience was.

My experience photographing everyone from politicians like Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Senator Penny Wong to musicians like Paul Kelly and Amy Taylor (Amyl and the Sniffers) has taught me that the best portraits happen when technical precision meets genuine human connection. I approach headshots seeking that moment where your authentic self emerges naturally, instead of attempting to push my own personality on you, as many headshot photographers do.

Decades of experience working on some of Australia's best and biggest magazines, and shooting loads and loads of high intensity commercial work means I'm pretty unflappable when it comes to taking your picture. I got you. I'm also quick. I once had four minutes to photograph the Prime Minister. I did it in two. We'll have all the lighting pre-set for you before you come, all you have to do is step in front of the camera and chill out.

Having my studio at Abbotsford Convent means I'm lucky enough to be in close proximity to a horde of other top class creatives, including Dana Leviston, hair and makeup artist to the stars. Many people think adding hair and makeup is an extravagance, but the difference is that while many artists can make people look overly made up, Dana excels at making you look like the best version of you. If you want to go crazy glam, she can do that too, but it doesn't have to be that. She's brilliant at making people feel relaxed and confident, which, it turns out, is pretty essential for a good headshot.

The experience

We'll start by having a chat about what you need and what you're comfortable with. Whether you need something corporate that makes you look trustworthy without being boring, or something more creative that shows your personality, we'll figure it out together.

Dana can handle hair and makeup if you'd like (highly recommended), drawing from her extensive editorial experience. Between the two of us, we'll make sure you leave feeling like you got something special rather than just another headshot.

The gorgeous surrounds of Abbotsford Convent make the whole experience so much more significant than visiting some dusty old warehouse studio. You can wander through the beautiful gardens, and pop to world famous Cam's Kiosk for coffee (or even a glass of wine) before or after the session. Instead of it feeling like a trip to the dentist, it ends up like an excuse to get pampered, hang out with some new friends while having your photo taken, then treat yourself to a stroll around the convent and a delicious lunch.
